Teen Girls Exploited and Trafficked in Times Square, Suspect Arrested

In a disturbing turn of events reminiscent of the dark days of Times Square’s past, two teenage girls were allegedly sexually exploited and forced into drug trafficking by a manipulative individual they encountered on the iconic Broadway strip. Shymell “Shy” Ephron, 35, stands accused of providing the girls, aged 15 and 17, with drugs and alcohol, while subjecting them to sexual abuse over the course of a week in May. Ephron’s arrest by FBI agents and NYPD officers led to the rescue of the girls, who are now being cared for by authorities.

The US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York has expressed concerns that there may be additional victims subjected to similar abuse. The recent surge in high-profile crimes in Times Square, including muggings, shootings, and stabbings, has raised alarm among law enforcement officials and residents alike. Retired NYPD Lt. John Macari has pointed to criminal justice reforms and the emboldening of criminals as contributing factors to the resurgence of illicit activities in the area.

Shymell Ephron, with a history of 15 prior arrests dating back to 2009, faces a seven-count indictment, including charges of coercion and enticement of a minor. If convicted, he could face a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison, with the possibility of life behind bars. Ephron’s bail request was denied due to concerns about his potential to flee.

Former undercover detective and John Jay College adjunct professor Michael Alcazar has called for increased police presence and patrols in Times Square to deter criminals and ensure public safety. Alcazar attributes the rise in drug and prostitution-related issues to factors such as increased foot traffic, the migrant crisis, and the central location of Times Square, which makes it an attractive target for predators preying on vulnerable individuals.

US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Damian Williams, has emphasized the commitment to safeguarding New York City from sexual predators. The FBI has set up a toll-free tip line for anyone with information related to this case or potential additional victims.
