Chillmaster Avoids Prison After Killing Pedestrian
Musician Chillmaster may have dodged prison, but not the court of public opinion, after he pleaded guilty to killing a pedestrian in a fatal accident and driving without a license.
Chillmaster Avoids Prison After Killing Pedestrian
This week, the Mbare Magistrates’ Court handed down its verdict. Chillmaster, real name Gift Hombarume, was sentenced to 420 hours of community service at Stoneridge Primary School and fined US$200 for driving without a valid license.
The charges followed a tragic road incident where Chillmaster hit 50-year-old Caston Charambira while driving towards Harare CBD with three passengers. Charambira, who was walking towards an area known as maSteps, died on the spot. His legs were crushed, and he suffered severe head injuries. He was later laid to rest in Zaka.
A Sudden U-turn Sparks Public Debate
Initially, Chillmaster pleaded not guilty to both charges. But in a dramatic turn on Friday, 2 May, he admitted to culpable homicide and driving without a license. That last-minute change of heart triggered mixed reactions online, with many questioning whether justice had truly been served.
Some social media users were shocked by the leniency, while others felt the community service sentence reflected accountability.
